The 2016 marks the debut of the Werfdans name — Afrikaans for the small dust whirlwinds that spin through the dusty Swartland vineyards — for this old-vine Cinsault.
Sourced from the same Darling old-vine site as our other Cinsault releases, the 2016 shows a real step up in concentration and texture, with an aromatic lift of marzipan, Turkish delight, dried coriander, violets and rose petal, carried through to sweet red berry fruit and a long, persistent finish. Made with minimal intervention and no additions beyond a touch of sulphur.
Master of Wine Greg Sherwood scored the 2016 96 points, calling it "next level seductive Cinsault quality" — his highest score yet for this wine.
